After a month-long chase, Amritpal Singh, the leader of Waris Punjab De and a sympathizer of Khalistan, has been arrested by the Punjab Police from the Moga district. Concerned about his fate, Amritpal’s family had been maintaining that the self-proclaimed Sikh preacher did not contact his family while he was on the run. However, his family members have heaved a sigh of relief after his arrest and said that the dilemma has ended and now they can begin a legal fight.

Amritpal’s paternal uncle, Sukhchain Singh, who retired as an inspector from Punjab Armed Police, said that they can now begin the legal fight. He also mentioned that whether Amritpal surrendered or was arrested, it hardly matters for them. Amritpal’s supporters will be sent to the Dibrugarh jail in Assam under the National Security Act, and now they can start the legal fight.

Amritpal’s uncle said that he learned about Amritpal’s arrest through television news Sunday morning. Harjit Singh, another of Amritpal’s paternal uncles, is already in Dibrugarh jail and is among nine close aides of Amritpal sent there after the stringent NSA was invoked against them following the police crackdown, which began on March 18.

Punjab Special Director General of Police (internal security) R N Dhoke said that Amritpal was an “NSA subject” and was being taken to Dibrugarh. After arresting him, the police took Amritpal to Bathinda to fly him to Assam. Amritpal’s surrender, followed by his formal arrest by the Punjab Police, comes three days after his wife Kirandeep Kaur, a UK national, was stopped from boarding a flight to England from Amritsar airport on Thursday.
