Anatomy Of A Scandal Review

Netflix's new London-set limited series "Anatomy of a Scandal" has a brutally silly device at work. At critical moments, often at the end of an episode, one character or another will suddenly become unsteady, a process that results in them flying backwards in the air or falling. This sudden change, which we want to understand, is an extreme visual metaphor for how it feels to be in the midst of turmoil.

This leads to the understanding that director S.J. Clarkson's not relying on its actors to sell the show's big moments through mere performances may, from Netflix's point of view, be a small price to pay for the extreme.

"Anatomy of a Scandal", in which Rupert Friend and Sienna Miller are caught in a political and sexual maelstrom as a couple, takes big swings, some of which connect.  Despite the capable cast and powerful themes, the show is so addicted to the chaos that it misses a chance to say anything.

The premise is certainly of interest at times:

Miller's Sophie Whitehouse sees her world fall apart after her husband, Parliament Minister James Whitehouse, is publicly accused of assault. The legal case that unfolds threatens to destroy not only Whitehouse's reputation and life but also to reveal aspects of their marriage that left Sophie in the dark.

(Flashbacks to the couple's initial meeting in Oxford reveal just how charming the privilege is, and how seductive James can be.) "Downton Abbey"'s Michelle Dockery plays the prosecution's barrister, most notably James seems enthusiastic about ending his career, for reasons all his own.

As of now, "The Undoing" - 2020 is an HBO show that was also about the secrets revealed within marriage by legal process. Both that limited series and the David E.  Made by Kelly. Here, however, while collaborating with Melissa James Gibson, his eye for the "sociological" details feels less exercised, as if crossing the Atlantic gave him the pleasure of being a little loose and lazy in his world-building.

To see the tales of politics

Neither Oxford nor London feel as real as Upper Manhattan or the bourgeois paradise of coastal California, through which Nicole Kidman floats Kelly's “Undoing” and “Big Little Lies”. And while "The Undoing" certainly had outlandish moments, Kelly's ability to create compelling suspense stops at an already absurd coincidence.

Which makes for somewhat punishing seating. It's too bad: Dockery, given a challenging role to play, makes you believe in her character's vengeance (if not always how she got where she came from).

And Friend and Miller, who both deserve a moment, play their half of the 'marital couple' quite well.  But these performances aren't anchored against a story with reality – which may be okay,

If the show weren't simultaneously trying to make a real point about the way women are abused by men in power. Like the characters in the action shots that end episodes of "Anatomy," we viewers are left floating, confused, and interrupted by new information, but the lack of context would provide a better-drawn series.
