The Ministry of Home Affairs has granted a special power to Assam Rifles (AR) to arrest and search any place without a warrant in 5 North Eastern states. The states include Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Nagaland and Mizoram.

The MHA notification issued on Thursday allows the border guarding forces on Indo-Myanmar border to not only arrest but also to search a place without having any warrant.

Before this, Assam Rifles could only arrest and search in the areas where the Armed Forces Special powers act was in effect.

"This is to basically correct that anomaly. As per law, the arresting team has to hand over the suspects to the local police within 24 hours," a senior Government functionary said.

"The MHA had lifted AFSPA from some areas of Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Mizoram and Nagaland sometimes back.
Now, the AR will exercise these powers and discharge their duties under sub-section(l) of section (4). Sections 47, 48, 49. 51, 53, 54, I49, ISO. l5] and 152 of the CrPC within the local limits of the area comprised within the border districts of Assam. Arunachal Pradesh. Manipur, Nagaland and Mizoram," the notification added.
