Arrested on his way to Hathras, Malayalam journalist Kappan awaits release

Accused as an extremist and charged under Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA), Kappan has been imprisoned for allegedly trying to incite trouble.

Siddique Kappan, aged 41, a Malayalam journalist was arrested in October 5, 2020 because he was going to Uttar Pradesh to report on the rape of a Dalit girl. Kappan is lodged in a Mathura jail for the past three months.

His wife said he was falsely charged. She is going to stage a sit-in protest in Thiruvanthapuram on the same lines that she staged last week.

Accused as an extremist and charged under Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA), Kappan has been imprisoned for allegedly trying to incite trouble.

About 20 people, including his wife, Raihanath; family and friends staged a protest on Tuesday.

Kappan with other three people were accused as being the members of Muslim Right wing outfit, Popular Front of India.

In a report published in The Telegraph, Kappan's wife said, "I’m a housewife who has been forced to hit the streets to seek justice for my husband, who has been wrongly accused of links with the PFI. Now it’s up to me and my family to ensure he gets justice."

According to his wife, Raihanath, Kppan has a bedridden mother who is 90 years old. His wife seeks permission to have a video call with Kappan.

The matter had came in the Kerala Assembly where the opposition leaders wanted the government to intervene. Pinarayi Vijayan, Chief Minister of Kerala cited limitations on the part of the government in the court cases.
