GUWAHATI: The  Indian Medical Association's  (IMA) Assam state branch has called for a 24-hour withdrawal of medical services, excluding emergency, from 6 am on September 3 in protest against the killing of an on-duty doctor by a mob in upper Assam's Jorh at district on Saturday.

The association, in a statement, said IMA's state branch has called for the 24-hour suspension of medical services as a mark of protest against the gruesome incident and failure on the part of the government to provide security to doctors.

State health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said, "The administration has been directed to take immediate steps against the culprits." said Sarma.

Reiterating policy against any sort of violence against doctors, health workers and health establishments, IMA state president Satyajit Borah and honorary general secretary Hemanga Baishya said, "It's painful on our part to express our concern over repeated assaults on doctors across Assam."

This is the third major incident of assault on doctors serving in tea gardens in Assam in recent times.
