SRINAGAR: On Sunday, two intruders who the Indian Army suspects to be Pakistani soldiers, were killed when the Army prevented a Pakistani Border Action Team (BAT) attempt to attack an Indian forward post along the Line of Control in Nowgam sector of Kupwara district of north Kashmir.

“The Army foiled a major BAT attempt to strike a forward post along the Line of Control in Nowgam in the early hours of December 30, 2018,” a statement issued by the defence spokesman said. “The intruders attempted to move by exploiting the thick jungle close to the LoC and were assisted by heavy covering fire of high-calibre weapons, such as mortars and rocket launchers, from the Pakistani post”, said the spokesman.

This was the Pakistan army second attempt in this year using BATs this year to push intruders into the Indian side of Jammu & Kashmir and attack the forward posts. The previous attempt was on February 23, 2018. In 2017, it had made five such attempts along the LoC in J&K. No one was killed in the February attempt but seven intruders and two Indian soldiers were killed in the five BAT attempts in 2017.
