Bangladeshi actress Pori Moni alleges rape, murder attempt by businessman; seeks justice from PM

In a Facebook post, prominent Bangladeshi film actress Shamsunnahar Smriti, also known as Pori Moni, said that a businessman attempted to rape and murder her in a club here, and demanded justice from Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.


She held a press conference later that night, accusing businessman Nasir U Mahmood, entertainment and cultural affairs secretary of Dhaka Boat Club, of attacking her, according to a local news channel.  She made the allegations in a Facebook post on Sunday without naming the suspect.


Nasir allegedly assaulted the 28-year-old actress four days ago at a club in Uttara, Dhaka.

According to the news outlet, the businessman could not be reached for comment right away.


Nasir is a real estate businessman and a founding member of the Dhaka Boat Club.

In a Facebook post, the actress referred to Prime Minister Hasina as "mother" and stated that she sought help from law enforcement officials but was denied justice.

“Where will I seek justice? the post read. I couldn’t find it in the last four days Everyone listens to the details and never follows through. I’m a girl, I’m an actor, but before that, I’m a human being. I can’t remain silent, she said in the post in Bangla.

Sohel Rana, an assistant IGP, stated that when the actress contacts the police, they will take action.

Later on Monday, popular film actress Shamsunnahar Smriti filed a police complaint, a Bangladeshi businessman was arrested on Monday.


Police raided the businessman's home after receiving the report and arrested him along with four others. Two of the detainees are FIR listed accused in the actress's case, while three others are their associates.

According to Harun or Rashid, joint commissioner (North) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police's Detective Branch, a charge under the Narcotics Control Act will be filed against the five, as drugs and alcohol were discovered during the raid. The accused, according to Harun, used to throw parties at several clubs, often exploiting young women.

Pori Moni became well-known quickly after joining the film industry in 2015. She has starred as the leading lady in over a dozen Bangladeshi films.

She was named one of Asia's 100 Digital Stars by Forbes magazine last year.
