Eddie Murphy will be making a return as the wisecracking Beverly Hills detective Axel Foley after nearly 30 years in the nostalgia fueled sequel to 1994’s Beverly Hills Cop 3, Beverly Hills Cops: Axel F. The movie stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Taylour Paige, Judge Reinhold, John Ashton, Paul Reiser, Bronson Pinchot, and Kevin Bacon, several of whom make a return from the hit trilogy from the 80s. In “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F”, Axel Foley reunites with old friends Billy Rosewood (Judge Reinhold) and John Taggart (John Ashton) to save his daughter, Jane’s (Taylour Paige) life from a dangerous conspiracy. The movie will feature Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Inception, Don Jon, Looper) in a new role as Jane’s ex-boyfriend and Beverly Hills 90210 detective, who becomes Axel’s partner.

Eddie Murphy first portrayed Axel Foley in 1984’s Beverly Hills Cop, which became the highest-grossing films of the year. The movie was followed by 2 sequels, 1987’s Beverly Hills Cop 2 and 1994’s Beverly Hills Cop 3. While the first 2 movies were cult hits, Beverly Hills Cop 3 was panned by the critics and fans alike. It currently holds an 11% rating on review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes.

The trailer for “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F” was a hit of nostalgia for the fans of the original trilogy as it showed returning charactors John Taggart, Jeffrey Friedman (Paul Reiser) and Billy Rosewood. The trailer revealed a story that involves Axel teaming up with Joseph Gordon-Levitt's cop character to save his old partner Billy. The trailer also featured Kevin Bacon as the captain of Axel's old precinct.
The tone of the trailer maintains the signature balance of harrowing action and goofy comedy that defines the original trilogy. While it doesn't show anything too graphic, the R rating of Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F means there will likely be scenes of violence akin to those found in the first three movies.
