Veteran singer cum songwriter Bhupinder Singh died yesterday due to cardiac arrest in Mumbai. He was 82 and during this period he has left enough reasons in front of us why he will be remembered for long? Bhupi was born in Amritsar in the year 1940, to a trained vocalist and his teacher in the early stages of life, Natha Singh. There was a point in Bhupinder’s career he was in complete hate with his father’s musical instruments but everything got settled over the due passage of time.

 
Bhupinder Singh at the very onset of his career performed at The ‘All India Radio’ and was also associated with ‘Delhi Doordarshan Centre’. In the year 1964, music director Madan Mohan heard him over AIR and invited him to Bombay. There he got his first breakthrough with ‘Hoke Majboor Mujhe Usne Bulaya Hoga’ with legendary Mohammad Rafi. Though he didn’t get too much recognition at the rate at which this song got hit, his career remained quite low in the early phase of his life, he only signed for low-budget films.

But tides and fortune for Bhupi turned when he joined R.D.Burman’s orchestra and played guitar in multiple tracks for him, including ‘Dum Maaro Dum’.

Huzoor Is Kadar Bhi Na Itra ke Chaliye: This sweet and flirty piece of work was featured in the film Masoom in the year 1983, with Shabana Azmi and versatile Naseeruddin Shah in the lead roles. Composed by another legend R. D. Burman with Bhupi adding life to this.


Hothon Pe Aisi Baat: This Sachin Dev Burman track is an upbeat number featuring two musical stalwarts in the form of Lata Mangeshkar and Bhupinder Singh. Their magical voices blended perfectly to create a sensational, rousing track.


Naam Gum Jayega: Sung by the two legendary voices of the Industry Lata and Bhupi collaborated again. It was for the movie Kinara, starring Jeetendra and Hema Malini in the year 1977. Composed by R. D. Burman and written by Gulzar.


Kabhi Kisi Ko Muqammal Jahaan Nahi Milta: This lovely Nida Fazli-penned track had Bhupinder Singh collaborating with Khayyam. The sentimental lyrics showcasing the harsh reality of life completed their meaning with Bhupinder’s voice in it.


Ek Akela Is Shaher Mein: Written by Gulzar, the movie Gharaonda starring Amol Palekar and Zarina Wahab in the lead role was released in 1977. The song was directed by Jaidev, with Bhupi giving the final touch to it.


Apart from his Bollywood career, he was too proficient in playing violin and guitar. Bhupinder married his love of life Bangladeshi singer Mithali Mukherjee, In the later part of their life, the couple collaborated in several duets. Bhupinder is survived by his wife and their son Nihal Singh, who is also a singer.
