Big relief to EPFO employees! Nominees can now claim double death relief fund, check details here

The Central Government has decided that the nominees or dependants would get double the amount of ex-gratia death relief fund if the employee has died accidentally.

Recently, the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) and Central Government have announced big statements for the employees and their dependents. The fund organization has said to provide relief to employees’ nominees. On the same breadth, the Central Government has claimed to double the amount of ex-gratia death relief fund to the nominees or dependent of the employee who has died accidentally. 


These major decisions would benefit more than 30 lakh employees, across the country.

A circular related to the same was published by the EPFO and the decisions have been implemented with immediate effect. The organization has also mentioned that this relief would not be given to the employees who have succumbed to Covid-19. 


It has also been reported that dependents of EPFO employees will now receive 8 lakh rupees at the time of their untimely death. In 2006, the dependant received just Rs 5000 from this sum and then the amount was increased from Rs 5000 to Rs 50,000 to Rs 4.20 lakh. 


This sum has been enhanced with the consent of the Central Provident Fund Commissioner, the Central Staff Welfare Committee, and the Employees' Provident Fund. If a Central Board employee dies as a result of a coronavirus, the order of 28 April 2020 will be reviewed.

Uma Mandal, Addl. Central PF Commissioner (HRM)/Secretary, EPF, informed, “Employees’ Provident Fund to the enhancement of the amount of Ex-gratia Death Relief Fund from Rs. 4.20 Lakh to Rs. 8.00 Lakh. The Ex-gratia Death Relief Fund of Rs. 8.00 Lakh (Rs. Eight Lakh only) shall be paid to the family members (nominee or legal heirs) of the deceased employee of the Central Board from the Welfare Fund where the cause of death is other than Covid-19 Disease. As far as the death cases due to Covid-19 are concerned, the same will be governed by the instructions issued by Head Office vide letter dated 28.04.2020.”
