On Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had introduced a Bill to provide 10% quota in jobs and education for the general category candidates. The important thing to be noted is that the bill was passed on the same day when it was introduced.

Mr Modi has described the passage of a Bill as a “landmark moment in our nation history”. “It is our endeavour to ensure that every poor person, irrespective of caste or creed, gets to lead a life of dignity, and gets access to all opportunities”, he said.

The Bill is for the benefit of the economically weak upper casts. The prime minister expressed his thanks to MPs from all the parties who supported the measure. “We are resolutely committed to the principle of ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas’,” he said.

The Bill was passed in Lok Sabha with only three votes against it. Now the bill is all set to be tabled in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday after receiving cross-party support in the Lok Sabha.
