Bittersweet pic of father and son duo wins Siena International Photo Awards 2021

Turkish Photographer Mehmet Aslan has won the top prize in Siena International Photo Awards 2021 for a photograph of a Syrian refugee, who is holding his son, who has lost both his limbs.

A powerful picture, clicked by Turkish Photographer Mehmet Aslan has topped the Siena International Photo Awards 2021. The photo captured features a Syrian father who lost his right leg holding his son, who has lost his upper and lower limbs. 


Mehmet has named the photographer “Hardship of Life.” Both father – Munzir and son – Mustafa, lost their limbs in Syria’s Idlib bombing. In the photo, Munzir can be seen resting his limb on a crutch as his son smiles down at him.

The mother was quoted saying, as per a report by Washington Post, “The picture has reached the world…We’ve tried for years to get our voices heard by anyone who would listen, to help with his treatment. We’d give anything to give him a better life”.

The winner of the “Photographer of the Year” title is awarded €1,500 (about $1,745) worth of photography equipment, a “Pangea Prize” crystal statuette, and other promotional prizes and opportunities.


The SIPA photograph was broadly categorized into twelve sections, like – “Street Photography,” “Journeys & Adventures,” “Fascinating Faces and Characters,” “The Beauty of Nature,” “Animals in Their Environment,” “Architecture & Urban Spaces,” “Sports in Action,” “Documentary & Photojournalism,” “COVID-19,” “Under 20,” “Storyboard,” and “Video: General.”
