2025 is turning out to be one of the worst years for India. While India is still haunted by the horrific Air India Plane Crash in Ahmedabad, another tragedy has hit the nation. On Sunday afternoon, a bridge over the Indrayani River near Kundmala village in Maval tehsil of Pune district collapsed at around 3:30 PM, leading to fears that 25 to 30 tourists may have been swept away by the river’s strong current.
As per reports, local MLA Sunil Shelke confirmed that six people, including children, have been confirmed dead so far. Rescue teams have managed to save six others. The incident occurred as a large group of people had gathered on the bridge to witness the river’s high water flow during the monsoon.
Kundmala, located about 30 km from Pune, is a common weekend destination, especially as it lies along the route to the Mumbai-Pune Expressway. The area typically sees a heavy influx of tourists during weekends.
Reports suggest that the bridge was already in a deteriorated and unsafe condition. At the time of the collapse, the structure was crowded well beyond its capacity, with several people reportedly crossing on foot and riding two-wheelers. The excess weight and aging structure are believed to have caused the collapse.
Rescue operations are underway with the assistance of disaster response teams, divers, and local authorities. The district administration has appealed to the public to stay away from the area and has launched an investigation into the structural integrity and maintenance history of the bridge.
