Jalandhar, December 28: Member of Parliament Santokh Singh Chaudhary said on Monday that the Congress party’s role in India’s development is unparalleled and the party not only fought for Independence, but also laid the foundation of a strong and secular India. To mark the 136th Foundation Day of the party, he led a Tiranga Yatra from the District Congress office to BMC Chowk and was accompanied by MLA Rajinder Beri, Mayor Jagdish Raj Raja, Jalandhar (Urban) Congress President Baldev Singh Dev, Mahila Congress President Jasleen Sethi, Youth Congress President Angad Dutta and Municipal Councillor Balraj Thakur along with hundreds of party members.

Speaking on the occasion, MP Chaudhary said that the Congress party started a public movement and its workers went to jails and sacrificed their lives to gain freedom from the British raj.

“After Independence, the nation started from zero but through hard work and dedication, Congress put India, which was extremely poor in 1947, on track to be a great democracy and a global power. From Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru to Dr Manmohan Singh, the INC has worked for the poor and marginalized. Our farmers brought in the Green Revolution and filled the government's granaries, but now the Modi government is out to destroy the same annadata in collusion with crony corporates,” he stated.

Chaudhary Santokh Singh further said that India was built on the idea of secularism, where no one was discriminated on the basis of religion, but BJP is out to demolish our constitutional values. “Our nation is the product of blood and sweat of millions of freedom fighters and its democratic institutions are respected all over the world, but the current fascist regime is tearing them down,” he added.

The Congress workers took a pledge to protect the constitutional values and the institutions.

MP Chaudhary urged everyone to stand with farmers and oppose all attempts by the Centre to cause harm to the people of India.
