Coronavirus Updates: India’s active cases below 8 lakh mark, total covid-19 tally breaches 7.49 million

The Health Ministry said this morning that COVID-19 testing capacity in India has ‘scaled up from one in January to over 9.32 crore at present’.

According to the Union health ministry, India’s tally of Covid-19 has reached to 7,494,551 after 61,871 new cases and 1,033 deaths were recorded between Friday and Saturday morning. The number of new infections reported in the past week has been below the 70,000 marks, with the lowest on October 13 at 55,342, data shows. India added 374,013 Covid-19 cases in the last week while the daily deaths have risen to over 1,000 on Sunday after remaining below 900 between Monday and Saturday, according to the data. 

The recoveries have increased to 6,597,209 as 72,614 people were cured of the viral disease in the last 24 hours, taking the national recovery rate to 88%. The government has said that “enhanced countrywide medical infrastructure, implementation of the Centre’s Standard Treatment Protocol by the States/UTs, and total dedication & commitment of doctors, paramedics and frontline workers have led to a persistent increase in the number of total recoveries with a commensurate dip in the fatality rate.”

The government has also said that India has the highest recovery rate and lowest fatality rate globally. 

The health ministry, “The Centre continues to support the State and UT Governments in the collective fight against the global pandemic. Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has deputed high-level Central teams to Kerala, Karnataka, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and West Bengal. These States have been reporting a surge in the number of new COVID cases in recent days.” 

“The teams will support the State efforts towards strengthening containment, surveillance, testing, infection prevention and control measures, and efficient clinical management of the positive cases. The Central teams shall also guide in effectively managing the challenges related to timely diagnosis and follow up,” it added.

# According to the health ministry data, there are 7,83,311 active cases in the country which comprise 10.45 per cent of the total caseload, the COVID-19 case fatality rate stands at 1.52 per cent.

# Jitendra Mani, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Metro) said that 100 challans have been issued to passengers for violating the COVID-19 guidelines. Passengers who were not wearing masks or maintaining social distancing have been issued challan. 

# Maharashtra -10,259 cases,  Kerala - 9,016 cases, Karnataka - 7,184 cases, Tamil Nadu - 4,295 cases and West Bengal - 3,865 cases have reported the maximum number of COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours, the data showed.

#6,597,209 patients have recovered from the disease so far.

# According to ICMR, a total of 94,224,190 samples tested for Covid-19 up to 17th October; 9,70,173 samples were tested yesterday.
