COVID Updates: With 884 deaths, India records 61,267 confirmed cases; schools and cinemas to reopen from October 15 and more

Union Minister Prakash Javadekar on Tuesday released guidelines for the reopening of cinema halls across the country from October 15 with 50 per cent capacity and one seat distance on September 30.

India recorded 61,267 coronavirus cases and 884 deaths in the last 24 hours on Tuesday Morning. The total number of COVID-9 cases in the country rose to 66,85,083 while the toll increased to 1,03,569. At present, India has 9,19,023 active cases while 56,62,491 people have recovered from the deadly infection and 1,03,569 total deaths according to the Union Health Ministry.

The imposition of micro lockdowns in several parts of Maharashtra and loss of work under MGNREGS due to rising infection have spiked the rate of unemployment in August in the state. This is extremely threatening for the revival of the COVID-hit economy, said Maharashtra government. Meanwhile, the Education Ministry on Monday had issued guidelines for reopening schools for all grades leaving the decision on the state governments. 

Covid-19 latest development:

# Over 20 lakh street vendors have applied for interest-free loans of Rs 10,000 each under the Prime Minister Street Vendor’s Atmanirbhar Nidhi (PM SVANidhi). They include nearly 10 lakh sellers of fruits and vegetables, and over 4 lakh selling snacks and fast food like chaat and gol gappa. Sellers of flowers and puja items, beauty products, shoes, kitchen items and electronics goods, such as mobile phones and chargers, cobblers are amongst other applicants.

# The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) said as many as 10,89,403 samples were tested for COVID-19 on October 5. Besides this, a  total of 8,10,71,797 samples have been tested in the country till October 5.  

# Dr Gagandeep Kang, professor of microbiology at Christian Medical College Vellore, who played a critical role in the development of the indigenous rotavirus vaccine said,  “Prioritisation needs to define purpose. If the goal is to prevent as much disease as possible, then we should vaccinate those most at risk of severe disease – healthcare workers, the elderly, those with comorbidities, etc..”  She added we need clarity on the goals and the goal is to prevent the virus transmission unless we cannot prioritize. 

# Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) on Monday revised the list of containment zones, reducing the number to 59 from 71 after a considerable fall in the amount of COVID cases. 

# Maharashtra's COVID-19 tally has increased to 14,53,653 on Monday with a single-day addition of 10,244 fresh cases, the state health department said. With 263 patients dying from the infection, the total fatality count went up to 38,347 in the state. 

# To secure the stocks and affordable pricing of COVID shots, India is delving into all options open including provisions under the Essential Commodities Act, Drugs and Cosmetics Act and Disaster Management Act.  

# Mizoram recorded 8 new COVID-19 cases, taking the total tally to 2,128. The number of active cases in the state is 291 while 1,837 people have been discharged so far. No death reported in the State till date: Government of Mizoram. 

# The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Germany rose to 2,639 to 303,258, data from the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) on Tuesday. With 9,546 total deaths by far in the country. 

# In August hotel rooms occupancy has seen an improvement in  Mumbai and Delhi, while leisure destinations like Goa and Rajasthan showed marked improvement as tourists ventured out, after relief from the six-month lockdown. 

# Odisha reported 2,673 new Covid-19 cases, 4,098 recoveries and 16 deaths on October 5. The total number of cases rises to 2,38,003 including 2,06,400 recoveries, 30,610 active cases and 940 deaths, the State Health Department.

# Minister for Health and Family Welfare Himanta Biswa Sarma said Assam reported 11 more coronavirus deaths on Monday, pushing the toll to 760. The coronavirus tally soared to 1,87,718 with 1,518 fresh cases in the state. While Covid-19 cases increased in West Bengal to 5,255 on Monday after 61 more people succumbed to the virus, the health department said.  3,348 fresh infections were reported in the state, which pushed the tally to 2,73,679. 

# The global coronavirus cases have crossed a mark of  35.6 million, while the deaths have increased to more than 1,045,928.
