According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), black fungus is detected in those patients who are under medication for other diseases that decrease their ability to fight against natural pathogens. The Covid-19 infection has catalyzed the fungal infection into a dangerous disease.

Haryana Congress Chief Kumari Selja said, “More than 40 cases related to black fungus disease have been reported in the state in past few days”.

Means of contraction

People coming in contact with fungal spores in the environment can develop mucormycosis. The infection can also develop on the skin after the fungus enters the skin through a cut, scrape, burn, or other skin injuries.

General Symptoms

The Black fungus is caused by a fungus called ‘mucor’, which is found on wet surfaces. General symptoms of this disease are headache, fever, pain under the eyes, nasal and sinus congestion, and partial loss of vision.

Cure and Treatment

The infection might begin with a skin infection but can spread to other parts of the body. Its treatment involves surgically removing all dead and infected tissues. In some cases, the infection may result in loss of the upper jaw or even the eye.

The cure may involve a 4-6 weeks course of intravenous anti-fungal therapy. As the infection affects various body parts, the treatment requires a team of microbiologists, internal medicine specialists, intensivist neurologists, ENT specialists, and others.

Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan has tweeted ways and advice to manage it.
