Coronavirus vaccination drive will be launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 16 online as the country will begin with the world's largest vaccination programme. India has approved emergency use of two vaccines - indigenous Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin and Serum Institute of India vaccine Covishield.

Nearly 3 crores healthcare and frontline workers will be vaccinated in the first phase of the vaccination drive while the government has kept those above 50 years of age and the under-50 population groups with co-morbidities numbering around 27 crores under priority after the healthcare and frontline workers.

Before deciding to launch the vaccination drive PM Modi had earlier reviewed the status of the covid-19 situation and vaccine preparedness undergoing in the country in a high-end meeting with the CMs of states and Union Territories. Last year, he had also taken a tour of all the vaccine manufacturing facilities to check their production status.

"After the detailed review, it was decided that given the forthcoming festivals including Lohri, Makar Sankranti, Pongal, Magh Bihu, etc, the Covid-19 vaccination will start from January 16, 2021," a government statement earlier said.
