Congress Working Committee is atodds on the election of new Congress chief. On Monday, CWC held a meeting todiscuss the party's poor performance in the recently-held Assembly polls andelection to the new party president.

In the meeting, Ashok Gehlot, GulamNabi Azad and Anand Sharma opposed the new President’s election saying there isno need for election during coronavirus pandemic.

Earlier, it was said that CWC hasdecided to elect Congress President by June 23. However, Congress interim chiefSonia Gandhi has not said anything regarding the matter.

Meanwhile, discussing the poor partyperformance in Assembly elections Sonia Gandhi said, “This CWC meeting has beenconvened to discuss the results of the recently-held Assembly polls. We have totake note of our serious setbacks. To say that we are deeply disappointed is tomake an understatement."

In the meeting, Sonia Gandhi saidthat the coronavirus crisis is worsening and the center has failed in fightingthe pandemic. "The situation has become even more catastrophic. Governancefailures have become even more stark. Scientific advice has been willfullyignored and the country is paying a horrendous price for the Modi government'sneglect of the pandemic, indeed its willful patronage of super-spreader eventsthat were allowed for partisan gains," she said.

Earlier in 2019, Rahul Gandhi hadresigned from the position of Congress chief after losing the Lok Sabhaelections and Sonia Gandhi became the interim chief of the party.
