Southern India has been witnessing heavy rainfall and strong winds for the past few days. On Tuesday, Cyclone Michaung made landfall following heavy rain in Andhra Pradesh and flooding in Chennai. However, in a major relief for South Indians, IMD stated that the severe cyclonic storm that originated in the Bay of Bengal weakened into a depression. Many areas have been witnessing electricity cuts. Even Team India cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin stated that there is no electricity at his Chennai home for the past 30 hours. Now, multiple tornado videos are doing rounds on social media as well. 

 

A user shared a video claiming that the footage belonged to Konaseema and tornado wreaked havoc during Cyclone Michaung. Many netizens expressed that it is the first time that they have witnessed a tornado in Southern India. A user wrote, "For the first ever time." Another user wrote, "Stay Safe". One more user wrote, "omg are u okay? stay safe."

 

It is pertinent to mention here that multiple reports suggest that tornados were predicted to hit south India. 

 

Cyclone Michaung Update

 

Chennai came to a standstill following heavy rain and flooding. Seventeen people died in the city due to rain-related incidents, making it one of the worst affected places due to the cyclone. Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to his official X handle and expressed his grief over the death of people. Furthermore, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin reportedly said that the Rs 4,000 crore investment in stormwater drains played a crucial role in minimizing the impact of what he called the "47-year high rainfall". As of now, IMD stated that Cyclone Michaung has weakened into a depression over northeast Telangana.
