Dead bodies of Covid patients pile up in Valsad Civil Hospital in Gujarat

Around 15 bodies could be seen packed in transparent bags as the hospital is unable to hand over the bodies to families.

The district hospital in Valsad, Gujarat is witnessing an unfortunate number of deaths of Corona-positive patients. Bodies of deceased Covid patients can be seen lying on the premises of the hospital.

Around 15 bodies could be seen packed in transparent bags as the hospital is unable to hand over the bodies to families. The hospital management has said that a death certificate is needed to hand over the bodies which are being delayed resulting in the current situation. The workload has increased and the hospital needs more staff.

Family members of deceased patients are waiting outside of the hospital for more than 36 hours. Still, no progress is observed in the situation.

According to hospital management, the Valsad hospital has 300 beds in the corona isolation ward. Seeing the current situation, 100 beds were added. All 400 beds in the hospital are occupied and district administration is working to provide additional facilities and accommodate more patients.

The situation is worsened as the hospital in the Valsad district also has to handle patients from rural areas of neighboring districts like Dang and Navsari.

On the matter, District Collector of Valsad, R R Rawal said, “I held meeting with the hospital and other officials to maintain all the protocols and ensure that no patient or their relatives have to suffer. A help desk will be set up at and the hospital has been ordered to hand over the bodies immediately after completing the formalities.”

Gujarat has reported 10,340 cases, the highest single-day spike with 110 fatalities. Meanwhile, the nation is reporting more than two lakh cases and more than 1000 fatalities daily.

The pandemic worsens as the health system collapses due to a shortage of medical facilities like beds, ventilators, and oxygen supplies.
