Reportedly, a girl in her twenties named Shraddha was working in a call centre in Mumbai when she met Aftab who was also working in the same office. Soon both of them fell in love. The family of Shraddha did not approve of her relationship with Aftab and so the couple eloped (though didn't marry), came to the national capital and started living-in together.

After the couple arrived in Delhi, Shraddha asked Aftab to get married, however, he was allegedly reluctant. On May 18, Aftab allegedly murdered her by strangulating her and then in the most shocking and cruel manner chopped her body into 35 pieces. The murderer then allegedly stored Shradhha's chopped body parts in a fridge for the next 18 days and then disposed of the body piece by piece in the forest area of Delhi's Mehrauli. Not only this, but to avoid any suspicion, he used to leave the house with a body part in a polybag at 2 a.m.

The Police stated that the matter came to the light when the missing woman's father approached to the Delhi Police after Shraddha stopped responding to calls. A senior police official was quoted by a news portal saying that during interrogation Aftab revealed that the duo used to fight frequently and she wanted to marry him. On the basis of this complaint, the Mehrauli police arrested Aftab for the murder of Shraddha.
