Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi on Tuesday finally allocated portfolios to newly-inducted ministers. The announcement comes hours after there were rumors of another tussle brewing within the congress over Home Ministry portfolio.
Reportedly, Deputy CM Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa was eyeing on home ministry. Punjab PCC chief Navjot Singh Sidhu was opposing his demand and wanted the ministry to remain under Chief Minister Channi.
Despite Sidhu’s objection Deputy CM Randhawa has been given the charge of Home Ministry.
Randhawa’s loyalists had argued that since he was in a narrow race with Channi for the post of Chief Minister, he should be given the home minister portfolio.
His confidants claimed that the home minister portfolio was given to Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Badal during the SAD regime. Because there was no deputy in Capt's government, the portfolio remained in the hands of the CM. Randhawa should be given the home ministry now that he is deputy CM.
Punjab PCC president Navjot Singh Sidhu, on the other hand, believed that the home ministry should remain under the control of CM Channi. Sidhu's camp claimed that the Captain, i.e. the Chief Minister, had this position during the previous Congress administration. As a result, it should remain in the hands of Chief Minister Charanjit Channi.
However, Randhawa was given charge of the ministry of home affairs. It’s been after long 4 years that the ministry does not remain under CM and is allocated to his deputy.

The 2015 sacrilege case, as well as drugs, are major concerns for Channi's government. Navjot Sindhu and the new administration are under a lot of political pressure to take action in these cases.
Now, if Sukhjinder Randhawa takes appropriate action in the said cases, he might politically overshadow Sidhu.
