After COVID 19, monkeypox and Tomato fever, a new disease has come up in India which is spreading in various cattle, especially cows. Cattle across eight states have died so far in the country due to this Lumpy Skin Disease.

This disease has created havoc in the country for milk producers. Many people have started believing that this disease can also spread to humans if they would consume cow milk.

Dr. Gurdev Chowdhary of Ankur Hospital, Jalandhar clarifies whether the above-stated belief is truth or a myth.

What is Lumpy Skin Disease?

This disease is caused by a virus called Poxviridae. It is transferred and spread in animals by blood-feeding insects. Till now nearly, 2 lakh cattle across the country have got affected due to this new disease which has come up.

What are its symptoms?

Some of the basic symptoms that come up when cattle are suffering from LSD are fever, lumpy skin, enlarged lymph nodes and difficulty in movement.

Can it spread to humans?

“Lumpy Skin disease is caused by an animal virus. This disease cannot be transferred to humans through cattle,” said Dr. Gurdev.

He further added that it is never wrong to take precautions so, whenever milk comes to your house be it from cow, buffalo or goat, always drink boiled or pasteurized milk.

Till now there has been no discovery for the treatment of this disease. The only thing that can be done is to take precautions.
