Dubai Rain returns: Multiple schools shut down & flight services disrupted due to heavy downpour

The National Centre of Meteorology clarified that Dubai's weather scenario was not anticipated to be as severe as what the city encountered on April 16.

While Dubai was still moving on over 1.6 years worth of rain in just 24 hours, the UAE's emirate is facing a similar kind of situation once again. Multiple flights were canceled, bus services were suspended and schools remained closed after Dubai witnessed heavy downpours along with thunderstorms on May 2, 2024. On Thursday, an orange alert was issued in Dubai. The National Centre of Meteorology clarified that Dubai's weather scenario was not anticipated to be as severe as what the city encountered on April 16. However, as a precaution, Dubai Authorities suspended various services and urged its citizens to remain indoors. 

Emirate Airlines Spokesperson was quoted saying, "Customers arriving or departing from Dubai airport on 2 May can expect some delays as flights are rescheduled." The Advisory warned people living in Dubai to avoid sailing. Furthermore, the Ports, Customs, and Free Zone Corporation (PCFC) announced the temporary suspension of accepting requests for the entry and departure of wooden dhows in Dubai.

 

Earlier this month, Dubai experienced the heaviest rains on record since 1949.  Notably, after hours of rain, the Sun came up in multiple cities of the UAE. Now, many Dubai Rain videos are going viral on social media. 

 

Why did Dubai face unusual weather last time?

 

As per a newswire that quoted the meteorological department, Dubai received a year and a half's worth of rain within 24 hours. The situation became so serious that operations at the Dubai airport were suspended for 25 minutes in the afternoon before resuming.  For the unversed, an average year sees 94.7 millimetres (3.73 inches) of rain at Dubai International Airport. A US media revealed Dubai flood reason or Dubai unusual rain reason saying that the desert city almost submerged under water due to a larger storm system traversing the Arabian Peninsula and moving across the Gulf of Oman. This same phenomenon is also bringing unusually wet weather to nearby Oman and southeastern Iran. At least 18 people have died in recent days as the heavy rains caused flooding in Oman.
