Election turnout: ECI failed to get maximum voters participation in Punjab

Punjab election recorded only 70 percent voters turnout, unable to touch 2017 mark.

The 2022 Punjab Legislative Assembly elections were held on 20 February 2022 in Punjab to elect the 117 members of the 16th Assembly of the Punjab Legislative Assembly. Voting started at 8 am and continued till 6 pm. Tight security arrangements were made during this time.

After fierce campaigns, ECI failed to gather maximum voters’ participation in Punjab. Voter turnout was 57.58 percent as of 3 pm and picked up pace towards the evening. Punjab multi-cornered fight with Congress, Aam Aadmi Party, Akali Dal-BSP and BJP-Punjab Lok Congress in the fray. Around 70 percent of voters’ turnout was recorded. Taking a look at previous records, in 2007 76 percent turnout, in 2012 78.30 percent turnout and in 2017 77.20 percent turnout was there. It declined by nearly 5 percent this year breaking the last 15 years record.
