New Delhi, Dec 28 (UNI) The fact that India is 'no longer' the subject of domestic politics in countries like Bangladesh and Sri Lanka should be taken as 'positive outcomes' of India's foreign policy management, a key analyst has said here.
In fact, the Government of India has taken care to ensure this, the official analyst maintained.
Indeed, in the coming elections in Bangladesh on December 30 so far at least India has not figured in any prominent manner, and that is equally true of the developments in Sri Lanka, the source said.
The ruling party in Bangladesh, headed by incumbent Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, has exuded confidence of victory. Ms Hasina has stated that the opposition BNP appeared to have sensed its defeat in Sunday's national election.
She, however, said that the opposition party could attempt to sabotage the polls. Remain alert to any subversive activity of the BNP and its cohorts, Ms Hasina has said wrapping up the election campaign.
They [BNP] could carry out attacks on Awami League leaders and workers as well, she told a poll rally in Cumilla, according to a report in 'The Daily Star'.
Meanwhile, in Delhi, the official analyst also said that: "In last five years, India's relations with the current government in Bangladesh under Ms Hasina have seen some of the progress on some of the issues which we have never made progress before.
Against this backdrop, the source cited the instances of land boundary and connectivity by rivers. Sources attribute 'patience' of running things for these outcomes in these two neighbouring countries and also the Maldives.
We have avoided knee jerk reactions or response to developments and we have shown patience, he said. These remarks assume significance in their own rights as while elections are due in Bangladesh sooner than later, in two other countries Sri Lanka and the Maldives there has been internal turmoil in more ways than one. But New Delhi has not come under flak for meddling in internal affairs of these countries.
However, the analyst pointed out that it is understood quite clearly that for Bangladesh, the Indian government has always experienced 'good rapport' with the dispensation headed by the incumbent Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
With the Hasina government, we have had very positive relations. They have been very positive on every front-connectivity, security and on trade and other international matters, the analyst pointed out.
In this context, the government sources have underlined that India's efforts have been to ensure that we have a low key profile. But, sources maintained - We don't make statements which are supportive or not supportive of any side" and at the end of the day, India will welcome the 'outcome' of the elections.
