Meta recently updated its Messenger app to no longer support texting across its platforms. This means that Facebook users and instagram users can no longer use the messenger app to chat with each other.

This feature was introduced in 2020 by Meta, formerly known as Facebook, but the company seems to have decided against continuing supporting it.

According to the Instagram support page, starting from mid-December 2023, cross app communication will be disabled, which means the following:

  • You won’t be able to start new conversations or calls with Facebook accounts from Instagram.

  • Any existing chats on Instagram that you’ve had with Facebook accounts will become read-only, even if these Facebook accounts are removed from the chat. This means that you and others with Instagram accounts can’t send new messages in these chats.

  • Facebook accounts won’t be able to view your Activity Status or whether you’ve seen a message.

  • Any existing chats you've had with Facebook accounts won't move to your inbox on Facebook or Messenger.

No statement has been give by Meta as to why the company decided to drop the support on cross-platform communication, but it will remain functional until mid-December.
