After clashes ensued due to tractor parade unrest on Republic day, the farmers have started one day hunger strike on Saturday to mark their protest against the contentious farm laws that the government says are necessary to double the income of farmers. However, farmers term these laws as 'black' and 'death warrant' for them.

Tractor parade that was meant to be a symbol of their protest against the government on Republic day turned berserk where farmers were again labeled as anti-nationals and crack becoming visible in the unions.

Farmers on the vanguard of this protest said one day hunger strike coincides with the death anniversary of father of the nation, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi.

Darshan Pal, one of the leaders of Samyukta Kisan Morcha was quoted by Reuters news agency, “The farmers’ movement was peaceful and will be peaceful.” He added, “The events on January 30 will be organised to spread the values of truth and non-violence.”

Meanwhile, 11 rounds of talks between government and farmers' unions have remained inconclusive. However, farmers are determined to convince government for repeal of laws.
