Special Coverage Special-Report

Omkar Nath Sharma, a 79-year-old man helps the needy by providing them medicines free of cost by asking people to provide him all the medicines that they don’t require so that it may help the needy.

As a matter of astonishment, he was hit up by a car in his youth at the age of 12 after which he became crippled. He has worked as a technician in Kailash Hospital in Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh, India, and now he is retired. There also he collected the unused medicines and distributed them among the poor.

But the main story started when he saw the collapse of the Delhi Metro under-construction bridge in 2008 in East Delhi after which he realized the shortage of medicines among the people especially among the poor. During this accident, two people were killed and many were injured. The injured ones were taken to a local hospital but were provided with nothing but basic medical needs which were not what they required at that time.

The injured and helpless people then came back to their homes to die as they had no expenses to get cured. Seeing all this happening he was left in complete dismay and came up with an idea of collecting medicines for the ones who need them the most. Nowadays, no one care for people around them but this man. He took up the decision and walks around 6-7 kilometres irrespective of his age and his impairment.

Omkar Nath Sharma is also well known as the “Medicine Baba” and roams around on the roads of New Delhi asking for help proudly. He wears plush slippers on his feet both indoors and outdoors with an orange kurta which he has designed himself. This attractive and eye-catching kurta displays his contact number. He announces himself as the “vendor’s cry”. ‘The Medicine Baba is here! Give me your old medicines! Don’t throw them away; they can save the lives of the poor!’

In the poor quarter of Manglapuri is a garage-sized room where all the medicines are all kept, overflowing in the boxes of all colours of the rainbow, opened blister packs, half-full medicine bottles, are all alphabetically arranged.

The Medicine Baba is awarded by Delhi Gaurav Award in 2016 and Shoorveer Award in Mumbai in 2017 for all the sacrifices he has made for the people who need help as well as support.
