A senior police officer may run for the 2024 Lok-Sabha elections from Sangrur. Sources say that an IPS officer, who has been a Police Commissioner in a major city, may contest from Sangrur or a nearby constituency in the upcoming elections. The officer has a good service record and upholds a respectable public reputation. Although his party affiliations are not final, sources say that he is in contact with several AAP representatives.

The Aam Aadmi Party will be looking for candidates as they suffered a devastating defeat in the 2022 Sangrur by-polls. SAD’s Simranjeet Singh Mann beat his nearest rival, AAP’s Gurmail Singh by around 5,800 votes. To add insult to injury, the seat was vacated by Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann, who relinquished the MP seat to become Chief Minister and is affiliated with the Aam Aadmi Party.

Several IPS officers have left their administrative posts and achieved success by joining politics in the past. Former IPS officer Kunwar Vijay Partap Singh also joined politics in 2021 and was given the AAP ticket in 2022 to contest in the election from Amritsar. It is likely that AAP will choose another IPS officer as their candidate for the elections.
