French President Emmanuel Macron has tested positive for coronavirus on Thursday, the French presidency said. After experiencing symptoms, the 42-year-old president took a Covid test and will now isolate for seven days.

Mr Macron "is still in charge" of running the country and will work remotely, said an official.

Earlier, this week France had imposed an overnight curfew to help deal with a second Covid-19 wave and rising cases there.

A statement on Thursday morning said, "The President of the Republic has been diagnosed positive for Covid-19 today. This diagnosis was made following a PCR test performed at the onset of the first symptoms."

The root of Mr Macron catching the virus is not known yet, but his office said it was identifying those who had been in close contact with Macron to inform them of the situation.
