FRIENDS Actor James Michael Tyler Battling With Stage 4 Prostate Cancer

Friends star James Michael Tyler urged fans to have regular medical checkups, adding that prostate cancer is "99 percent treatable" if caught early.

On Monday, actor James Michael Tyler stated that he is battling from stage 4 prostate cancer. Tyler is most known for his role in the iconic comedy Friends as Gunther.

During an appearance on local television show, the 59-year-old actor shared his diagnosis. Tyler said that he was diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer in 2018 and that it had spread to his bones.

During the coronavirus pandemic, James Michael Tyler's disease started to mutating, and he is now unable to walk. “I didn't go in for a test, which was terrible. So the cancer mutated during the pandemic, and it's progressed,” he said, adding that it's a "late-stage cancer."

The actor said,  “So eventually, you know, it’s gonna probably get me.”


James Michael Tyler acts as Gunther, the manager of the Central Perk coffee shop in Friends. He was also thought to be smitten with Rachel (Jennifer Aniston). The actor was seen interacting with the core cast, which included Courteney Cox, David Schwimmer, Jennifer Aniston, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, and Matthew Perry, during the reunion special.


The Friends star concluded the interview by urging fans to get regular physical checks, saying that prostate cancer is '99 percent treatable' if detected early.
