New Delhi: Wrestling gold-medalist Babita Phogat on Monday joined BJP in presence of Union Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju.

Her father and coach Mahavir Phogat, who was with Ajay Chautala-led Jannayak Janata Party, also joined the saffron party giving Haryana's ruling party a major boost in the run-up to the forthcoming assembly elections.

Mahavir Phogat has actually inspired popular Hindi film 'Dangal' that shows how an Indian coach and a father working in a rural setting brings about a drastic change in her daughter's life and career.

Mr. Phogat also praised the BJP government at the Centre and in Haryana.

"The BJP government did well by scrapping Article 370," he said. Babita Phogat had made name for herself when she won a silver medal at the 2010 Commonwealth Games and a bronze medal at the 2012 World Wrestling Championships.

Later, she won the gold medal in the 2014 Commonwealth Games and 2018 Commonwealth Games. 

It is being presumed that Ms. Babita may be BJP nominee in the coming elections either from Badhra or Dadri assembly segments - both falling in the Charkhi Dadri district.
