Govt orders Twitter to block 1,178 accounts, Twitter says seeking talks with technology minister in India

The government of India had earlier also ordered Twitter to withhold accounts that were tweeting about farmers protest and those who using one hashtag related to 'genocide of farmers' on the micro-blogging site.

After the tweet of Rihanna and Greta Thunberg, thegovernment of India has announced it indirectly as propaganda and manycelebrities, cricketers and public figures have come out in support of Indiangovernment by saying it is India's internal matter and they claim that Indiawould solve it. They have also used a hashtag India together. However, nowTwitter has likely become an eyesore for the government because of thedissenting voices available on it.

The government of India had earlier also ordered Twitterto withhold accounts that were tweeting about farmers protest and those whousing one hashtag related to 'genocide of farmers' on the micro-blogging site.

Now, the government has again asked Twitter to block1,178 accounts but as per the statement issued by authorities in Twitter andaccording to a report published in Reuters, it has been noted that the companyis seeking talks with the concerned minister in India who looks aftertechnology.

Indian government had written on February 4 to Twitterasking it to block accounts backed by arch-rival Pakistan and oftensympathizers of Khalistan or secessionist people. Security agencies in Indiasaid that many accounts are being operated from outside India and they areamplifying the sharing of misinformation on Twitter.

Adding that the safety of its employees is number onepriority of the company, a spokesperson of Twitter in India said to Reuters, “Wecontinue to be engaged with the government of India from a position of respectand have reached out to the Honourable Minister for a formal dialogue.”  

Meanwhile the Public Policy head of Twitter in India hasalso resigned. Although, personal reasons were cited for her resignation.
