Holi is popularly known as ‘Festival of Colours’ & ‘Festival of Spring’ which signifies the victory of good over evil. Holi is celebrated to mark the victory of Lord Vishnu as Narasimha over Hiranyakashipu. Holi celebrations start almost a week prior to the original day. People in India prepare various kinds of sweets, make organic colours, prepare their water-filled balloons and guns ready to play Holi. A night before Holi, Holika Dahan is celebrated where people perform religious rituals in front of a bonfire. Holi Dahan is celebrated to kill all the evils around us just the way Holika was killed in the fire. Next morning, people celebrate Holi by smearing each other with colours and drenching each other with water balloons.
History of Holi
According to Hindu mythology, Holi is known for celebrating triumph of good over evil as Holika, sister of Hiranyakashipu was killed in fire. As per history, when Prahalad refused to accept his father’s orders, Hiranyakashipu took help of his sister Holika to get him killed. Holi took Prahalad on her lap and sat inside the bonfire as she had the ability to be immune against fire. During this, Prahalad kept praying to Lord Vishnu. Later, Holika was burned alive while Prahlad came out unaffected.
