The Supreme Court of India is hearing the case of Republic TV Chief Arnab Goswami in which he is seeking interim bail from the 2018 abetment of suicide case. The journalist challenged the November 9 order of the Bombay High Court refusing him interim bail in the 2018 abetment to suicide case.

Though the apex court is on a Diwali break, it is arranged for a special session to hear Arnab’s case. A two-judge bench comprising Justices DY Chandrachud and Indira Banerjee is hearing the case through video conferencing.

Justice Chandrachud says to senior advocate Harish Salve, appearing for Arnab Goswami, "Before you begin, there is one aspect we look at in these matters where there is a challenge to the FIRs. The only prayer which survives is the quashing of FIR."

In an intense session of the hearing, Senior Advocate Harish Salve appearing for Arnab Goswami said, "Last month a man in Maharashtra committed suicide saying the Chief Minister failed to pay salary? What you do? Arrest the Chief Minister? "

"There was no personal relationship between  Arnab Goswami and Anvay Naik. A mere contractual dispute cannot be abetment to suicide," added Salve.

A few days back, two employees of Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation(MSRTC or simply ST) have committed suicide within a span of just 12 hours. One of them, in his suicide letter, has blamed the ST corporation and Uddhav Thackeray government for non-payment of dues, reduction in salaries, and irregularities as the reason for taking such a drastic decision of giving away his life.

The hearing is still going on, Advocate Kapil Sibbal is strongly opposing the interim bail of Arnab Goswami.
