On September 14, 1949, Hindi was given the status of an official language. Since then, to promote the language and make people aware of its importance, September 14th has been celebrated as Hindi Diwas.

This day marks the anniversary of the Constituent Assembly of India’s decision to adopt Hindi, written in the Devanagari script, as the official language of the Republic of India.

For India, Hindi is not just a language but also a symbol of the country’s cultural heritage and unity. From school days, children are taught the significance of Hindi Diwas. The Hindi language originated from Sanskrit, and its script is Devanagari. It is spoken in most states of India and has a rich literary history. In most northern states of India, people converse with each other in Hindi. Today, Hindi is not only spoken in India but has also gained global recognition.

Hindi Diwas honours the language and aims to popularise it among younger generations. Awards like Rajbhasha Gaurav Puraskar and Rajbhasha Kirti Puraskar are given for contributions to promoting Hindi. Various literary and cultural events are organised in educational institutions on this day. Government departments and social organisations also hold events to celebrate the occasion.

Hindi ranks third in the list of the most spoken languages worldwide. English holds the first position, followed by Mandarin Chinese in second place. According to a Statista report, around 609.5 million people across the globe use Hindi as their primary language. Many foreign social media influencers have also been influenced by Hindi and are creating content in this language. Some have even moved to India to settle here.

Hindi Literature: Contribution of Hindi Writers 

Great poets and writers like Mahadevi Verma, Munshi Premchand, Rabindranath Tagore, Ramdhari Singh Dinkar, Sharatchandra Chattopadhyay, and Suryakant Tripathi Nirala have given Hindi literature a unique identity worldwide. Most plays are based on their works. Even in various international events, these renowned writers' literature is used to promote the Hindi language and showcase India's cultural heritage. Several films have also been made based on these plays.
