Monsoon Mayhem: Incessant rain claims 76 lives in 72 hours, Red alert in Himachal & Orange alert in Uttarakhand issued

Northern India seems to observing the wrath of rain gods as a total of 76 lives have been lost in the past 76 hours in the deadly constant rain. States like Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Delhi, UP, and Punjab are witnessing incessant rain for the past 6 days. As a result, in Himachal Pradesh landslides occurred at 39 places in the past 24 hours. The constant rain has risen the level of the Beas river and therefore due to the strong currents of it many buildings were washed away and also bridges collapsed. In Punjab, 2,000 students were left stranded in Ropar's Chitkara University. As a result, the district administration had to take Indian Army's help in the evacuation. A flood-like situation took place in Ropar & parts of Patilaia after a breach in SYL. Not only this, approx 250 cars submerged into the water in Punjab Police Academy in Phillaur which was pulled out by the jawans.

At the same time, in Uttarkashi of Uttarakhand, stones fell on the vehicles of tourists from Madhya Pradesh after breaking from the mountain. Four tourists from Indore died in this accident. 10 people have been injured in the incident. Coming to Delhi, the water level of Yamuna River has also crossed the danger mark. Till 8 am on Tuesday, the water of the river was flowing at 206.32 meters. In 1978, the highest went up to 207.49 m. Notably, there are multiple videos doing rounds on social media showing many people stuck inside their homes as their areas have been water-logged.

Notably, thousands of worshipers head to Amarnath Yatra in the Sravan month of the Hindu Calender which started on July 4 this year. However, due to the monsoon mayhem, the annual pilgrimage to the holy cave shrine of Shri Amarnath in south Kashmir Himalayas remained suspended from Jammu City for the fourth consecutive day. The nearly 250 km long Jammu-Srinagar national highway (NH44) suffered extensive damage in Ramban district due to heavy rains in the past two days. The Yatra convoys from Jammu had to pass through Ramban to reach the cave shrine.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD), on Tuesday, issued "red" and "orange" alerts for several districts of Himachal Pradesh for the next 24 hours. A red alert has been issued for very heavy rainfall in Solan, Shimla, Sirmaur, Kullu, Mandi, Kinnaur, and Lahaul for the next 24 hours. Additionally, an orange alert has been issued in Una, Hamirpur, Kangra, and Chamba. A flash flood warning has been issued for Mandi, Kinnaur, and Lahaul-Spiti for the next 24 hours. IMD also issued an orange alert in Uttarakhand. For those who are unaware, Red alert means the area is likely to receive 204.5 mm of rainfall in a 24-hour duration, while an Orange alert means a rainfall range between 115.6 to 204.4 mm in a day.

Anticipated heavy rainfall in states such as Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Haryana, Punjab, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Sikkim, West Bengal, Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Mizoram, Manipur, Tripura, Gujarat, Goa, Karnataka, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, and Odisha. Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Telangana, and Tamil Nadu may experience scattered showers accompanied by lightning.
