Coronavirus has been spreading in India in a horrific way. In the last 24 hours, India's Covid 19 tally crosses 34 Lakh mark with reporting of 76,472 new cases. Death count has also touched the mark of 62550 with 1,021 new deaths. The number of new cases in India on Thursday was the highest in the world, crossing that of the United States. 

Some of the following updates on Covid are:

1. The J&K government on Friday said that 696 new positive cases of novel corona virus, 202 from Jammu division and 494 from Kashmir division, have been reported taking the total number of positive cases in Jammu and Kashmir to 35,831 even as seven new COVID-19 deaths have been reported from Kashmir division.

2. Congress MP from Tamil Nadu's Kanyakumari H. Vasanthakumar died here on Friday evening due to Covid-19, officials said. He was 70.

3. Asian Games gold medal-winning wrestler Vinesh Phogat has tested positive for the dreaded coronavirus. She was tested by the Indian government as per the protocol as she was to receive the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna, the country's top sports accolade, in New Delhi on Saturday.

4. Gujarat recorded its highest spike of 1,272 coronavirus cases on Friday, taking its tally to 92,601 while the death toll rose to 2,978 as 14 more patients succumbed.

5. Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar admitted to Medanta in Gurugram on August 25 after testing positive for coronavirus is making satisfactory progress, the government said on Friday.

6. Senior IAS officer and Bengaluru civic body's Solid Waste Management Special Commissioner, D. Randeep, has tested positive for the novel coronavirus, he said on Friday. Though Randeep was mostly in home quarantine this week, he still suggested people who came in close contact with him to go for a test.

7. Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh said on Friday evening that he would be going into seven-day isolation after meeting a Covid-19 positive Congress MLA during the one-day session of the Vidhan Sabha.

Though the country is recording around 1,000 deaths a day from the coronavirus, roughly the same as the US and Brazil, India is far better than these countries when we consider the number of deaths per million people.
