In a major win for India and the security personnel, the Pakistan Rangers on Wednesday let out of custody the Border Security Force (BSF) jawan Purnam Shaw, who had been taken by them into custody and held for nearly three weeks.
The BSF jawan had crossed over the international border by mistake in Punjab's Ferozpur district. Purnam Shaw had wandered onto the Pakistani territory one day after the horrific Pahalgam attacks on April 22, when terrorists killed 26 innocent people in cold blood.
BSF also released a statement regarding Pakistan handing back the Indian jawan.
"Constable Purnam Kumar Shaw has been repatriated from Pakistan by BSF at the Attari-Wagha border today at 1030 hrs," the BSF stated in a release.
"Constable Purnam Kumar Shaw had crossed over to Pak territory inadvertently while on operational duty in the Ferozepur sector on 23rd April 2025 at about 1150 hrs and was arrested by Pak Rangers," it further added.
The handover of the BSF jawan took place according to standard protocols. All other directives will be adopted upon his return to the home country, including his medical tests to determine whether he was tortured and treated brutally by the Pakistani rangers.
The move comes days after India and Pakistan agreed on an "understanding" to end military operations on May 10, reportedly after the latter heightened tensions on the border in retaliation to India's 'Operation Sindoor,' which pounded and swooped on numerous terror camps and their critical infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir on May 7.
Earlier, BSF jawan Purnam Shaw's wife, Rajni, had come to Ferozpur and met top BSF officials, begging them to get him freed.
She was promised every possible attempt to get him back to the country.
