India’s global internet speed rank declines to 129 in 139 countries; Pakistan, Nepal performing better than us

Average mobile download speed in India has declined over 4.4 per cent to 12.91Mbps in December, according to Ookla’s Speedtest Global Index.

According to Ookla's Speedtest Global Index, India has slipped one rank below for both mobile Internet speeds and fixed broadband speeds in December. The country ranks 129th position out of 139 countries for mobile Internet speeds and has declined to 65th place in 176 countries for fixed broadband speeds, according to the index. 

Unlike India, Qatar has seen a growth of two-point in December and overtaken South Korea and the United Arab Emirates to become the leading country in terms of mobile Internet speeds. On the other hand, Thailand has surpassed Hong Kong and Singapore and has emerged as the top amongst all nations with the fastest fixed broadband speeds.


Mobile Internet speeds

The average speed of mobile download in India has declined over 4.4 per cent to 12.91Mbps from 13.51Mbps in November, according to the December 2020 data available on the Speedtest Global Index. However, there has been a slight improvement in the average mobile upload speed in the country that has increased over 1.4 per cent to 4.97Mbps from 4.90Mbps. India’s Latency rate hit 51 milliseconds.

The Speedtest Global Index by Ookla shows that Qatar leads with 178.01Mbps of mobile download speed, followed by the UAE that has an average mobile download speed of 177.52Mbps. 

In November, the UAE was ahead in ranking with the fastest mobile Internet speed for offering 170.30Mbps of average download speed, while South Korea position decreased from second to third with an average mobile download speed of 169.03Mbps.

China and Australia have continued to remain at the fourth and fifth ranks in the global index for mobile Internet speeds, however, China's average mobile download speed has risen to 155.89Mbps from 148.12Mbps in November, while Australia has seen a decline from 113.16Mbps to 112.68Mbps.

Average download speed on mobile devices has increased to 3.30 per cent to 47.20Mbps in December from 45.69Mbps in November, the index revealed, globally. 


India’s Neighbors are performing better

Pakistan holds 114th position in terms of mobile internet speed with 18.42Mbps, Syria has slipped by ten places to 109th out of 100 countries. 

Nepal stands at 115 positions with an average speed of 18.42Mbps, Bangladesh with 10.64Mbps at 135 positions. 

Sri Lanka too performed better than India with an average speed of 16.91Mbps, ranking at 122.  

 

Fixed Broadband speeds

According to the Speedtest Global Index, India’s position in fixed broadband speeds has declined to 65th with an average download speed of  53.90Mbps, registering 50.75Mbps of average upload speed on fixed broadband. In November, average download speed on fixed broadband in India was 52.02Mbps, while its average upload speed was 48.57Mbps.

Thailand's global rank has risen by two spots and is now leading on the fixed broadband index, with 308.35Mbps of average download speed and 260.86Mbps of upload speed in December. 

Second position for Singapore with average download and upload speeds of 245.31Mbps and 231.58Mbps, respectively. 

Hong Kong place has decreased from second to third with an average download speed of 226.80Mbps and upload speed of 212.26Mbps.

Romania on 4th position and Switzerland are on the fifth position with an average download speed of 190.60Mbps and 188.88Mbps, respectively.

Global average download speed on fixed broadband has increased to 96.43Mbps in December from 91.96Mbps in November, displays Ookla’s index. 

Average upload speed on fixed broadband has seen a growth of 52.31Mbps from 49.44Mbps. 

Global average latency rate remains the same at 21 milliseconds.
