The accountability of Ludhiana’s Central Jail has again been brought into question after video portraying the inmates celebrating a grand birthday party went viral on the internet. The video shot on a smartphone at the Central Jail in Ludhiana raises questions about the security of the jail administer under whose vigil, the mobile phone was smuggled into the prison.

The Central Jail of Ludhiana district of Punjab is often in the news for its carelessness and arbitrariness of the prisoners. The state government claims to ban contraband in Punjab jails or parties among prisoners. But the video surfaced which is now going viral exposes the government’s false claim. In it, the prisoners sitting in the jail barracks are seen singing happy birthday and are also seen cheering by clinking glasses.

The jail administration has repeatedly boasted about the security at their facilities. An example of how prisoners and detainees are living a comfortable life in jail can be seen in a video that has gone viral. The jail administration has been alerted after the video. The officials are continuously claiming about the security of the jail that it is impossible to take mobile phones and other material inside under any circumstances. Police have also swung into action after the video surfaced in which the inmates are openly using mobile phones. The officials have claimed to severely tighten up the security on the premises. But despite this, mobile phones, intoxicants, mobile SIMs and objectionable items are continuously being found there.

Balbir Singh, Deputy Superintendent, Central Jail says that the video going viral is of a birthday party in which the prisoners were celebrating. When the information was received, the officers went to the spot, they found that the mobile from which the video was made had been promptly destroyed by the prisoner. The matter has been sent to the police for action. Action has been taken against the remaining prisoners as per the jail’s rules and regulations.
