In the latest development, Punjab Police has cancelled leaves of all officials till 14th April 2023. Also, the officials who were on leave have also been called to join duty back as soon as possible. Punjab’s DGP Gaurav Yadav on 6th April 2023 issued an order stating that the leaves of officials who have recently applied and for those who have already taken it have been cancelled with immediate effect.
Many organizations have linked cancellations of leaves to Amritpal Singh. Some news organizations stated that DGP has cancelled leaves of all officials as Amritpal Singh is about to surrender today while many wrote that Waris Punjab De Chief has called meeting of sarbat Khalsa because of which this decision has been taken. Punjab Police on 7th April 2023 took to its Twitter handle and shared that all these reasons are fake and also advised people not to believe in false rumours.
ADGP Law & Order Arpit Shukla confirmed with Trues Scoop that leaves have been cancelled but clearly stated that Amritpal Singh’s surrender is not the reason for it.
There are likely 3 reasons for the cancellation of leaves. The first one is that Amritpal Singh is still far away from police’s grasp because of which certain decisions regarding his arrest can be taken. Another reason could be as Jalandhar Lok Sabha by-elections is on card, police officials might be assigned certain duties. The last reason could be as Baisakhi is around the corner and cross-border tensions have increased in Punjab, so to maintain peace & harmony more police officials would be required to be on duty.
These could be the reasons but police have till now not officially confirmed the reasons for the cancellation of leaves. While it has clearly been said that Amritpal Singh’s surrender is not the reason.
