Hockey has been evolving for ages. Since civilizationsthis Ancient game of Hockey is present, and right from Arabs to Ethiopians, everyone has played the variations of this game. Some played for relaxation andothers to become better warriors. As for India, the modern game, field gamewas introduced by the British Army regiments and people started admiring thegame. In 1928, the Olympic debut was made in Amsterdam and India brought its firstOlympic gold at that time but since 1984, the Indian Hockey team wasn’t able tomake any success.
The current scenario at Olympics:
Butnow seems the time when the Indian hockey team is actually back and hasrecently defeated Argentina with 3-1. Talking of the hockey team of Argentina, they have been the gold medallist of the Rio Olympics and with this sign, it ishoped that the old prestige of Indian hockey is finally back. Till now the teamhas recorded a win of 3 matches in the group round.
After 37 years, this miracle has happened and as for today’smatch, the Indian team dominated all four quarters. None other than the Indian hockey team was able to keep up the game in the first two quarters. Thefirst shot was made on the 43rd minute by Varun Kumar on a penaltycorner. Before the fourth quarter, in the last 2 minutes, the third goal wasmade by Vivek Sagar in the 58th minute, and just in the next minute, thecaptain of the Indian hockey team made the 4th goal.
The Japanese hockey team:
Tomorrow is the last poolmatch which is between India and Japan. Japan’s hockey team is the weakest andthey have already been defeated in three out of four matches. If India beats Japanthey will then have 4 matches which will be won, and it is the first time thishas happened since 1972. In the past, India won 5 matches out of 7 group matches. After 1984, the Indian team has never won more than 2 group stage matches.
No medals since 1980:
To win the medal the Indian team has to struggle a lot and win many matches, theyhave decided to reach the quarter-finals. After finishing the 2ndpool, the Indian players will have to play the last 8 matches against the Netherlands, Britain, or Germany (these players have won 2 out of 3-3 matches in Pool B). As statedabove the Indian Hockey players' record has not been good against these players. The last medal was won by India in the 1980 Moscow Olympics and after that, there isno other record.
Argentina’s Hockeyteam: The Indian team has defeated Argentina for the second time continuously,in the Olympic Team. In Rio Olympics, the score was 2-1 and India won in the groupstage match. But the latter managed to make it and won the gold in the RioOlympics and India was defeated in the quarter-finals by Belgium’s HockeyTeam.
