In another major breakthrough in the ongoing corruption investigation, Building Inspector Harpreet Kaur has been picked up by the Vigilance Department after the previous arrests of ATP Sukhdev Vashisht and MLA Raman Arora. Harpreet Kaur was brought to court today, where the Vigilance team obtained a two-day remand for interrogation.
As per reports, Harpreet Kaur was arrested following charges that she had extorted money from the owner of a local bakery at the behest of MLA Raman Arora. The owner of the bakery deposed that he had given lakhs of rupees to Harpreet Kaur as a facilitation charge for the construction of his bakery. On the basis of this deposition, Vigilance officials detained and then arrested Harpreet Kaur on corruption charges.
Late last night, the Vigilance team, accompanied by Raman Arora, took Inspector Harpreet Kaur to the Civil Hospital for a mandatory medical examination before presenting her in court. During today's hearing, the Vigilance Department had requested a five-day remand to investigate further, but the court extended a two-day remand.
The arrest is another big step in the Vigilance Department's crusade against corruption among the administrative ranks of the city. The investigation is ongoing, and further information is expected as the remand period goes by.
