The city of Jalandhar is all set to get E-Bus services in the coming months. Jalandhar will be part of Punjab’s green mobility mission as the district gears up for the rollout of over 97 air-conditioned electric buses (e-buses) under the Central Government’s PM e-Bus Seva Scheme, awarded to Gautam Adani’s company through MOHUA (Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs).

Jalandhar E-Bus Service Update

Prabhnoor Singh, Consultant PM e-bus Sewa Scheme, talking to True Scoop, informed that the tendering process for the construction of an e-bus depot in Jalandhar has already been completed. The construction is expected to begin in July, with a six-month deadline, aiming for completion by December 2024. Until the depot is ready, the vendor will not begin delivery of the buses.

The nodal officer of this project is Mandeep Kaur PCS, Joint Commissioner at Municipal Corporation, Jalandhar.

Part of the Statewide Rollout in 5 Districts

Jalandhar is among the five districts selected in Punjab for the e-bus rollout, alongside Amritsar, Ludhiana, Patiala, and Mohali. However, Mohali’s participation is yet to be fully confirmed.

E-Bus Specifications & Route Plans

Jalandhar has submitted a proposal for 97 AC e-buses, but the actual number may exceed 100 due to the Centre's provision of 10–15% additional units. These buses will be categorized as:

  • 42 buses – 7-meter category (for short routes like Maqsudan, Tanda Chowk, Devi Talab Mandir)
  • 39 buses – 9-meter category (for both short and mid-length routes)
  • 16 buses – 12-meter category (for longer routes like Jalandhar to Kartarpur, Lambra, AGI Infra, Jandu Singha)

Jalandhar is the only city in Punjab to have opted for 7-meter e-buses, which are compact and suitable for narrower roads and shorter routes. These are currently under production.

Tentative Jalandhar e-Bus fare structure

The district administration has proposed a fare of Rs 5 for up to 3 km and Rs 10 for 3–5 km. However, the Punjab Government is yet to finalize the fare structure.

Jalandhar E-Bus start date

Although buses are expected to arrive by October–November 2025, the actual launch will depend on depot readiness, which is projected for December. A formal launch date is yet to be announced. However, it will start only after the depot construction is completed.
