Two women hailing from Jalandhar recently married each other in Gurudwara Sahib in Kharar. After getting married in Kharar, the Jalandhar women approached the High Court and sought Police protection as their parents were angry at them. As a result, the Punjab & Haryana High Court took cognizance of the petition and asked SSP Jalandhar Mukhwinder Singh Bhullar to provide security to both the girls in the case.

Reportedly, the Jalandhar 'married' women in their petition informed the court that they loved each other and therefore on October 18, they got married in Kharar's Gurudwara. Pointing out that their marriage was not accepted by their parents, the couple stated that their life is in danger.

In fear for their life, the couple reportedly also gave a letter to the SSP of Jalandhar. However, after no development took place, the couple approached the High Court.

It is worth mentioning that same-sex marriage in Punjab is not new. A lesbian couple Dimple, 27 - who uses the pronoun he - and Manisha, 21, got married in Bathinda Gurudwara on 18 September with the blessings of their families. However, after their marriage, a major controversy erupted. As a result,  the Akal Takht disqualified the priests at a Bathinda gurdwara from performing religious services after they performed a same-sex wedding at the shrine.

Furthermore, a few days back, the Akal Takht also nullified the marriage of the lesbian couple. After their marriage had come to the fore, the wedding was criticized by some religious leaders, including Giani Raghbir Singh who declared that "same-sex marriage was unnatural and contrary to Sikh ethics"

UPDATE

In a new twist in the Jalandhar girl's marriage case,  Gurudwara Sahib Guru Nanak Niwas of Karora village of Mohali has refused the claims that same-sex marriage was conducted. The granthi of the Gurudwara has reportedly kept the Aadhar cards of the boy and girl in their records. It means a normal marriage was not and not same-sex marriage. In this matter, Jalandhar Rural SSP Mukhwinder Singh Bhullar was quoted saying, "This is a clerical mistake".
