In a big relief to defaulters of property tax, the Local Bodies Department has introduced a One-Time Settlement (OTS) policy, providing for total waiver of interest and penalty to those paying their pending property tax dues by July 31, 2025. The scheme, released by the Municipal Corporation, Jalandhar, is aimed at promoting timely payment of tax and improving municipal revenues towards better civic facilities.
Highlights of the OTS policy
100% waiver
Pay your pending property tax by July 31, 2025, to obtain a complete waiver of interest and penalties.
50% waiver
In case you fail to meet the July deadline, you can still obtain a 50% waiver of interest and penalties by paying your dues by October 31, 2025.
No waiver thereafter
In 2025, no concessions will be given, and full interest and penalties will be levied on pending amounts.
Property tax is a significant source of finances for urban local authorities, with up to 30% of municipal revenues in several Indian cities, as indicated by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs. While it provides much-needed funds to urban local bodies, a large number of property owners default on payments, which puts a burden on municipal budgets and affects key services such as sanitation, road works, and water supply.
Steps to avail the waiver
- Check your outstanding property tax on the official Municipal Corporation, Jalandhar website or by visiting the local municipal office.
- Pay your dues in full within the respective deadlines to be eligible for the waiver.
- Get an official receipt of payment and a waiver applied.
A higher level official of the Municipal Corporation Jalandhar said
"This OTS policy is a golden chance for residents to settle their dues without paying extra charges. The recovered amount will go into city infrastructure and public services."
