In light of escalating tensions between India and Pakistan, the administration in Jalandhar has ramped up security measures to prevent any disruption to public safety. The move follows a nighttime blackout order issued in Gurdaspur and comes amid concerns over a “warlike” atmosphere in border areas.

Under Section 163 of the Indian Civil Security Code, 2023, the Deputy Commissioner of Jalandhar, Dr. Himanshu Aggarwal, and Police Commissioner Dhanpreet Kaur have jointly issued a set of stringent directives. These orders are effective from May 6, 2025, to July 5, 2025, and are aimed at ensuring law and order across the district.

Key Directives for Jalandhar:

1. Mandatory Identification at Hospitality Establishments:

Hotels, motels, and guest houses in Jalandhar are required to verify the identity of every guest using government-issued photo IDs and valid mobile numbers.

- A self-attested copy of the ID must be submitted at check-in.

- Daily records of all guests must be sent to the nearest police station by 10 AM.

- Weekly verification of these records will be conducted by the station in charge.

- Foreign nationals must be reported to the Foreigners Registration Office at the Police Commissioner’s Office.

2. Widespread CCTV Surveillance:

All commercial lodging facilities, restaurants, marriage palaces, and banquet halls must install CCTV cameras at key points, including

- Entrances

- Reception desks

- Corridors

- Elevators

3. Ban on Weapons and Public Assemblies:

To prevent any untoward incidents, the following restrictions are in place within the Jalandhar Commissionerate:

- Carrying weapons — including rods, sharp objects, or any deadly items — in vehicles is prohibited.

- Assemblies of five or more persons are banned.

- Sloganeering and processions are strictly not allowed.

4. Regulation of Events and Marriage Functions:

Event organizers must ensure guests do not bring weapons to wedding venues.

Marriage palaces must maintain surveillance and are accountable for any violations.

5. Tenant and worker verification:

Property owners are mandated to report all new tenants, paying guests (PGs), and domestic workers to the nearest Punjab Police Sanjh Kendra before accommodation or employment begins.

6. Firecracker control:

To minimize noise pollution and enhance traceability, firecracker dealers must ensure decibel levels are visibly marked on all products.

Enforcement and penalties

Authorities have warned that non-compliance with any of the above directives will result in strict legal action. Officials stated that these preventive steps are crucial in the current geopolitical climate and urged citizens to cooperate for the greater good.
